About Us
As of now, BZO Design is a one man show -- Ben Z. Oblas.
I spent the first 18 years of my life in Issaquah Washington where as a young person I found great interest in drawing cartoons and building odd projects in my dad's shop. These early projects helped me to develop a sense of craftsmanship, artistry and design. As with many young people, my interests were all over the map, however by the end of high school I began to lean towards dimensional design.
I earned my Bachelor's Degree in Graphic Design from Loyola Marymount University in 1998 . Studying graphic design gave me the freedom to solve problems creatively while incorporating and honoring ideas from the past. I was impressed by designers such as Paul Rand and Josef Muller-Brockman who could create elegance from simplicity. It took me a while to make the connection to three dimensional art.
Bachelor's Degree in hand, I moved from LA to Seattle, to Colorado and back again. During those travels I met my wife Sara, and found my life's passion. Upon returning to Seattle I began looking for a mentor in the field of woodworking.
Good intentions often have good results as I quickly learned. In a matter of 6 months I found my way into the shops of two of Seattle's finest cabinet makers, Hugh Montgomery and Rick Swanson. These two gentlemen spent the better part of 3 years in their respective shops, teaching me the finer points of woodworking and how to survive as a young entrepreneur. I absorbed all I could and in the meantime developed my own design aesthetic and thoughts about craftsmanship.
BZO Design was launched in January 2006 in a small shop in Issaquah, Washington.
Today I reside in Ellensburg, Washington, with my wife Sara. I look forward to providing excellent cabinetry and woodworking services to clients throughout Washington.
